Spectrum Firebreath is a very rare ability that comes from a recessive, mutated gene found only in Firedrakes and their subspecies. The gene was originally for fire that could adapt to different conditions: the fire of dragons with this gene would burn hotter in extreme cold, lasted longer in water, and could even push the unrivaled resistance to heat in firedrakes. However, through some outside stimulus before the subspecies began to emerge- possibly the introduction of Vorpal to the species- the gene mutated so that the fire would have completely different effects depending on its color, earning it the name Spectrum Firebreath. A dragon with Spectrum Firebreath is fully able to control what color of fire it breathes. However, possibly as a result of the mutation, the gene became rare and very recessive, so the ability is incredibly difficult to come by.
